Windows 7 exploit (the first?) confirmed by Microsoft

Windows 7 users would be well-advised to block outgoing ports 139 and 445. Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a vulnerability that affects SMB in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 RC2. Worst case scenario: you connect to a malicious server then it crashes your PC.

The beauty here is that, in a perfect world, these ports would be blocked by default, making the exploit much less troubling. Let’s say you’re messing around on your computer, and all of a sudden Windows (or your firewall of choice) prompts you to open port 445 for a connection. So you say to yourself, “Hmm, I’m pretty sure my game of chess doesn’t need to access an SMB share to work properly, so I’m going to go ahead and deny that port-open request.”

But that’s now how the real world works.

It comes down to this: block those two ports when you’re not actively using them. No problems.

I could make some sort of snide remark about this being the first of many (maybe!) Windows 7 exploits, but let’s face it: when you’re dealing with so many lines of code, you’re bound to find a few bugs in there.

Oh, and Microsoft hasn’t said when it plans to patch the exploit. Presumably it will do so with its next big first Tuesday of the month patch day.

Police raid ‘body revival’ clinic, five doctors arrested

Sixteen people, including five lady doctors, were arrested by officers of the Versova police station on Tuesday for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of curing diseases and charging exorbitant fees for the treatment.

The arrested include Monis Khan, the 25-year-old son of "doctor" Munir Khan who runs the clinic from where they were arrested. However, the police could not arrest Munir who reportedly fled away when the police reached his clinic.

Police said Munir along with the arrested lady doctors has cheated several people in the past few years by giving them false promise to cure serious ailments such as cancer, brain tumor, diabetes, paralysis, spondilitis, tuberculoses and blood pressure.

Advertisement :

"Munir used to charge a whopping Rs16,000 each time he treated a patient and he would hand over a bottle, claiming it contained a 'life-saving medicine'," a police officer from Versova police station said.

After receiving complaints about the doctor, the police got the medicine tested by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).

"In its report, the FDA said the content in the bottle did not have any medicinal property," the officer said. The police then registered a complaint and decided to arrest Munir. On Tuesday, when a team of officers reached the doctor's clinic, his staff resisted the police and did not let them enter the clinic.
"This gave Munir an opportunity to escape. We have arrested 16 persons, including five lady doctors, who assisted Munir. The arrested persons will be produced in the court on Wednesday," said Dilip Suryavanshi, assistant commissioner of police.
The five lady doctors were arrested under the Maharashtra Medical Practitioner Act for allegedly aiding and abetting Munir in his activities, he added.
"There are four cases against Munir Khan who sold a medicine called 'body revival' priced at Rs16,000 per bottle," said Suryavanshi.

"He also advertised his medicines on local cable channels and websites. He claimed he had complete cure for diseases such as cancer, brain tumor, diabetes, paralysis, spondilitis, tuberculoses, blood pressure, cholesterol and many others," added Suryavanshi.

When FDA officials first went to inquire about the quack, he claimed he was a naturopathy practitioner.

Now, a robot for Rs. 15k: Courtesy Indian Engineer

Bangalore: An Indian engineering graduate, Pulkit Gaur, has developed a robot that can go underwater and clean water or chemical tanks. This project is developed by Gridbots, an entrepreneurial venture by Gaur, this low-cost robot will remove any sludge particles in water. "This compact machine has tracks fitted for movement. It has a drive system on the front side to which a brush mechanism is attached to scratch dirt from the tank walls. We are also considering using a filter," said Gaur to Bangalore Mirror.

This robot is available for consumers as well. This robot is available at Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000, and is a consumer version of SaUsR, the robot that is already in use in medicine industries. These robots are targeted at those who make medicines. They employ them to prevent sludge formation in tanks. "SaUsR carries out underwater operations with ease and lets you use this robot as a sophisticated underwater cleaning unit. It has on-board intelligent electronics that lets it navigate in fully-autonomous mode. With a high resolution on-board camera having pan-tilt capabilities, it can spot even minutest details of your water/chemical tank," said Gaur.

Gaur is a production and industrial engineer from MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur. He graduated in 2004 and since then has been pursuing his childhood passion. "I have been working on these robots since school days. Earlier, it was all about taking part in competitions. I soon realized robotics was in its nascent stage, and a lot can be built on it," he said. His resume goes up to 17 pages and was appreciated by former President A P J Abdul Kalam for his efforts.

Gridbots was a start-up that took shape through his passion for robotics. "I wanted to start a venture that would come up with innovative products that run on intelligence. I wanted to do something more than the assembly of robots. It had to be a multi-purpose product for my client," he said. Gridbots started two years ago in Ahmedabad and presently employs 15 people. It plans to recruit 35 more by this year-end.

Gaur already has many plans chalked out for his company. "We are working on developing defence robots, and also a surveillance robot that can be controlled via mobile or the Internet," he added. Few of his other creations include an image- understanding technology and a consumer robot that does household chores.

Local residents bust prostitution racket in Delhi

NEW DELHI - Over 100 residents of Mahipalpur area near Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Thursday tried to barge into a guest house after the policefailed to act on their complaints about a prostitution racket being run from it.

Police, called to the spot after commotion, arrested four women, including two Russians, on prostitution charges.

The people, all residents of Mahipalpur area, gathered in front of the 365 Inn guest house to protest the sex racket and some of them scuffled with the staff of the guest house and pimps.

At this, the women and the staff inside the premises locked themselves in. One of the protesters, Satbir Singh, then called the police.

The police arrested three women while one jumped off the building while trying to escape. “She injured her leg and was arrested,” said a police officer.

The police took all the four women - two Russians and two Indians - to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where the injured Indian woman managed to give the escorting policemen the slip.

The other three were arrested and a case of immoral trafficking registered against all the four women.

One of the local residents said they had already informed the police of the racket but no action was taken.

“We had to take the matters in our hands as police were not taking any action. Such things leave bad impression on our children and society,” the resident said.

Do you think Nokia ? Nokia Maps triggers protests

JABALPUR: Sores of activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) rampaged a Nokia showroom for showing Kashmir as part of Pakistan's territory in its mobile navigation system.

They barged into a Nokia showroom and snatched mobile phones and burnt them. Besides, they also set hoardings on fire outside the showroom. Dozens of policemen were present when the attack took place.

A BJP leader and a deputy in the state assembly demanded legal action against Nokia.

"Nokia has introduced a software. When we heard about it, then the members of the BJYM protested in front of the Nokia showroom. This is a case of anti-nationalism. We demanded that the Nokia and other people involved in the conspiracy be booked for spreading anti-national activities. We will intensify the protest if this case has not been registered," said Sharad Jain, the BJP legislator.

Nokia's mobile mapping and navigation service, Nokia Maps, allows people to pre-plan their journey at home on their PC and synchronise with their mobile, giving access to pre-planned routes and favourite destinations while on the move.

It also includes high-resolution aerial images and 3D landmarks for 216 cities and terrain maps.

"This software is developed by Nokia. This is the problem of Nokia and we are not concerned with it as we are merely shop owners, not the client of the company. But, the manner in which the mob entered and started torching the shop is bad," said Rafiq Khan, the Nokia showroom owner.

Shazahn Padamsee Launch with Yash Raj Films

Take for instance, Shazahn Padamsee, who turned down a full-fledged role with a successful banner, only to debut with Yash Raj Films, albeit in a small role. Well, not every actress out there gets a ‘rocket’ launch like this one, right? Of course, the other reason is that she wanted to star with hottie, Ranbir Kapoor in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, in an important but small role. It’s not the size that always matters, no? Besides, ask any of our B-town biggies, there is no short-cut to stardom. It’s not ‘Rocket’- science either, really. So good going gal!

Talk about making it ‘big’ in B’wood, every newcomer wants to make a grand entry.

Dussehra :: Popular Festival Delhi,Noida and Gurgaon

Dussehra is a popular festival celebrated by Hindus all over India, albeit with different names. It is also known as Vijayadashmi ('Vijay' meaning 'victory' and 'Dashmi meaning 'tenth day), as it is believed that it was on this day that Lord Rama killed the demon-king, Ravana and rescued his abducted wife - Sita. In other words, it signifies the triumph of good over evil. The legendary triumph is reenacted to the day. In the northern parts of India, huge effigies of Ravana, his giant brother Kumbhkarna and son Meghnath are placed in vast open grounds. Fireworks and crackers are placed inside the effigies.

Actors dressed as Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana enact the final moments of the battle, at the Ramlila ground. After the enactment of the climax of the war with Ravana, the character playing Rama shoots an arrow with a flaming tip at the effigies from a safe distance and the crowd bursts up in cheer, as the crackers catch fire. The enthusiasm and the cheers sometimes even drown the deafening blast. Merriment ensues, as people indulge themselves games, dance and music that are held at the fair.

Bengalis celebrate Dusshera as a part of their main festival - Durga Puja. This day marks the end of Durga Pooja celebrations, the preceding nine days being collectively referred to as 'Navratri'. Vijayadashmi is dedicated to Mother Goddess Shakti, who incarnated in the form of Goddess Durga, a combined manifestation of the divine energies of the Holy Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and all the other devatas, when they summoned her to kill the mighty demon known as Mahishasura and freed the world from his terror.

On Vijayadashmi, the idols of Goddess Durga are immersed into water, after the nine days of festivities. It is said that the people of the earth in the eastern state of West Bengal adopted Durga as their daughter and thus, she visits the home of her parents every year, during the last four days of Navratri, along with her sons Ganesha and Kartikeya, and daughters Lakshmi and Saraswati. She finally leaves for her husband's place on Vijayadashmi. Similar customs are seen in Orissa and Assam. In the North-eastern state of Tripura, huge fairs are conducted and effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarna are burnts at Ramlila maidans.

In the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Vijayadashmi holds special significance. The day is considered auspicious for starting education or any form of art, such as dance and music. Saraswati Puja is conducted on the day, when the formal commencement of education of small kids takes place. It is called 'Vidya aarambham' (the beginning of Vidya, meaning education). In Karnataka (especially Mysore) and Andhra Pradesh, Dusshera is celebrated with fanfare. Huge processions can be witnessed in both the States. Although Dussehra is celebrated in different ways across India, the motive remains the same - to spread good cheer and celebrate the victory of good over the evil.

Delhi Refinancing Opportunites and Understanding of Refinancing

What is a Refinancing?

Refinancing refers to the replacement of an existing debt obligation with a debt obligation bearing different terms. The most common consumer refinancing is for a home mortgage.

What are Advantages of Refinancing?

Refinancing may be undertaken to reduce interest rate/interest costs (by refinancing at a lower rate), to extend the repayment time, to pay off other debt(s), to reduce one's periodic payment obligations (sometimes by taking a longer-term loan), to reduce or alter risk (such as by refinancing from a variable-rate to a fixed-rate loan), and/or to raise cash for investment, consumption, or the payment of a dividend.

In essence, refinancing can alter the monthly payments owed on the loan either by changing the loan's interest rate, or by altering the term to maturity of the loan. More favourable lending conditions may reduce overall borrowing costs. Refinancing is used in most cases to improve overall cash flow.

Another use of refinancing is to reduce the risk associated with an existing loan. Interest rates on adjustable-rate loans and mortgages shift up and down based on the movements of the various indices used to calculate them. By refinancing an adjustable-rate mortgage into a fixed-rate one, the risk of interest rates increasing dramatically is removed, thus ensuring a steady interest rate over time. This flexibility comes at a price as lenders typically charge a risk premium for fixed rate loans.

In the context of personal (as opposed to corporate) finance, refinancing a loan or a series of debts can assist in paying off high-interest debt such as credit card debt, with lower-interest debt such as that of a fixed-rate home mortgage. This can allow a lender to reduce borrowing costs by more closely aligning the cost of borrowing with the general creditworthiness and collateral security available from the borrower. For home mortgages, in the United States, there may be certain tax advantages available with refinancing, particularly if one does not pay Alternative Minimum Tax.

What are Risk Factor of Refinancing?

Most fixed-term debt contains penalty clauses (known as "call provisions") that are triggered by an early payment of the loan, either in its entirety or a specified portion. In addition, there are also closing and transaction fees typically associated with refinancing debt. In some cases, these fees may outweigh any savings generated through refinancing the loan itself. Typically, one only rationally considers refinancing if the potential for a substantial cost savings exists, or if there is a need to extend the loan due to weak cash flow or other non-recurring commitments.

In addition, some refinanced loans, while having lower initial payments, may result in larger total interest costs over the life of the loan, or expose the borrower to greater risks than the existing loan, depending on the type of loan used to refinance the existing debt. Calculating the up-front, ongoing, and potentially variable costs of refinancing is an important part of the decision on whether or not to refinance.

Nano Car's

Probable buyers from all walks of life are checking it out. Some are serious about the money they want to invest while others just want a taste of the latest craze. Even the diamante-dripping socialite, who thinks it’s a disgrace to discuss a car that costs just half her monthly budget, is discreetly sending her chauffeur to fetch a booking form. “Arrey, bachche khelenge,” is her condescending excuse.

But the Nano’s space meter is a genuine eye-opener. I had a quick peek at it at the AutoExpo last year and had wondered how a tall (pun intended) man like Ratan Tata could comfortably fit onto its jelly bean-like shape. But when I got the chance to actually sit inside one, I couldn’t help but pat myself on the back for being from the country that had produced this miracle.

The Nano is small, but doesn’t look so. Statistics aside, it has more leg space than the Maruti 800. Both the driver and passengers at the back can stretch their limbs comfortable. Maruti 800 drivers of average height face a problem: their knees bump against the dashboard. The Nano let’s you stretch your legs full. For a shorter person, the front seat has to be dragged ahead to reach the clutch! More space at the back!

The car’s tallboy shape ensures that you don’t feel the roof is caving in (as it does in the Maruti).

Visa-free/Visa-on-Arrival Travel Access for Indian Passport Holders

According to visa and passport information from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), many countries and territories provide visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to holders of Republic of India passports.

Only 20 countries and territories are visa-free accessible[citation needed]. Visa prior to arrival or pre-arrangement required for countries or territories not mentioned below.

Where visa-free access is permitted, such access is not necessarily a right, and admission may technically be at the discretion of border enforcement officers. Visitors engaging in activities other than tourism, including unpaid work, may require a visa or work permit.

Where the Indian is usually resident is also important in determining the visa requirements to visit any country. For example, Indians resident in UK, USA or Canada holding a residence permit valid for atleast 6 months do not need a visa to travel to Costa Rica for tourism purposes. Similarly, residents in US, do not need a tourist visa for Cayman Islands or Bermuda.

e-Passport (Biometric Passport) for Indians

Indian Government has just recently initiated first phase deployment of Biometric e-Passport for Diplomatic Passport holders in India and abroad. The new passports have been designed indigenously in India by the Central Passport Organisation, the India Security Press and IIT Kanpur, it contains a security chip with all personal data and digital images. In first phase new passports will have 64KB chip which contains personal photograph of passport holder and subsequently it will have a fingerprint. The new passport has already tested with passport readers in United States and have 4 second of response time which is 2/5th of US Passport 10 second response time. It need not be carried in a metal jacket for security reasons, it will first need to be skimmed through a reader, after which it would generate an access code which then unlocks the chip for reader access.

Cigar Smoking :: The Health Risks - A Herbal Solution at Kangra Herbal

We have all heard of the risks associated with smoking cigarettes, but what are the risks of cigar smoking?

Are the risks of smoking cigars just as dangerous, or more so? According to the National Cancer Instituted, regular cigar smoking can result in a major health threat. Scientific research has linked cigar smoking with cancers of the larynx, lungs, esophagus, and oral cavity. Newer research also indicates that cigar smoking may be strongly linked to the development of cancer in the pancreas.

Doctors also caution that individuals who regularly inhale while enjoying a cigar are also at greater risk of developing lung disease and heart problems. The health threats of cigar smoking appear to increase dramatically in those individuals who smoke regularly and inhale while smoking. Someone who smokes three to four cigars each day will him or herself at eight times the risk of developing some kind of oral cancer than a nonsmoker.

Unfortunately, we do not yet know the health risks of smoking the occasional cigar. It seems clear however that smoking cigars on a daily basis can pose serious health risks. Many individuals wonder if cigars are as addictive as cigarettes. Many wonder why, for instance, so many people become addicted to cigarettes, and not cigars? The truth is that any tobacco product can become addictive because it contains nicotine. Witness the effects of smokeless tobacco products on individuals. These products, such as chewing tobacco, can become very addictive, simply because they contain tobacco, which in turn contains nicotine. Many cigar smokers do not inhale deeply, thus causing the nicotine to be inhaled superficially.

Cigarette smokers tend to inhale, causing the nicotine to be absorbed faster and more readily by the lungs. Even though most cigar smokers inhale the nicotine more superficially, it is still possible to become addicted if the user smokes cigars on a regular basis. If nicotine is so addictive, why don't more cigar smokers smoke more often? It appears that more people avoid becoming 'hooked' on cigars for several reasons.

The most obvious reason is that the nicotine is inhaled much more superficially than in regular cigarette smoking, causing less nicotine to be absorbed by the body. Also, cigars are not as readily accessible as cigarettes. They are viewed by most as a luxury item, saved for special occasions and used infrequently. However, when cigars are smoked on a regular basis, they can become addictive. The health risks of any kind of smoking increase dramatically as frequency of use increases.
